I have been taking classes, attending seminars, lectures and reading as many books as possible during our lockdown. I enjoy mediation much more than ever before and the message I have received is pretty clear to me: We need to be better listeners as leaders rather than trying to solve every problem. Our friends, employees, families, customers and business associates sometimes confide in us their thoughts and concerns. When someone bares their soul to us, we need to listen rather than just jump in and try to fix the problem. Many people will run from us if we step in too fast and others are so deeply hurt and struggling that they don’t care what we say. Listening is such a lost skill and yet it is so easy to do. You know we all need a shot of salvation once in a while.
Taking this time to grow spiritually, mentally and physically just seems to be a good thing to do. Who knows where we will be a year from now? If someone told us we would be where we are at now last Labor Day, we would have said they were nuts. You only have today. The past is gone, and the future is not a guarantee.
I am so proud of my children. Not only are they good businesspeople, they have learned to be teachers to their children. I hope people take this time to be better humans and live life to the fullest. When this all ends, let’s hope we all are better people and learn to live together as one.
